Knowing where every note is on the fretboard separates bassists who play shapes from bassists who play music. A bassist who knows the fretboard can find any note instantly.

The 7-day method

  • Day 1: E string (E-F-G-A-B-C-D-E)
  • Day 2: A string (A-B-C-D-E-F-G-A)
  • Day 3: D string (D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D)
  • Day 4: G string (G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G)
  • Day 5: Natural notes on all strings, 1st to 12th fret
  • Day 6: Sharps and flats
  • Day 7: Random note quiz

Five minutes per day. Say each note out loud as you play it. Test yourself by closing your eyes and finding a called-out note.

The pattern

The musical alphabet is A-B-C-D-E-F-G, then repeats. Each fret is one semitone. The 12th fret is the octave — same note as the open string.
