Recording electric guitar on a laptop usually requires a suitable instrument input, stable audio software, a safe monitoring path and a recorder. Amp/cabinet simulation is needed when you want a processed electric-guitar sound, but a clean DI can also be captured for practice review or later re-amping.

The short answer

Connect the guitar to an audio interface's instrument/Hi-Z input, select that interface as the software input and output, set gain for the hardest attack with headroom, choose a stable buffer, load an amp and cabinet stage, and record a short test. Listen for clipping, crackles, doubled monitoring and latency before the real take.

The audio interface

The built-in microphone can record a guitar or amplifier in the room, but it is not a direct electric-guitar instrument input and introduces room/microphone variables. For direct recording, use an interface with an instrument/Hi-Z input or an appropriate DI/preamp route.

Choose by the laptop and workflow:

  • Current operating-system and driver/backend support.
  • Instrument input impedance and headroom.
  • Headphone/output routing.
  • Direct-monitoring controls.
  • Number of inputs required.
  • Stable measured latency.
  • Connector and power requirements.
  • Support/warranty and current documentation.

Do not choose only by popularity or a colored gain LED. Meter calibration and driver behavior differ. Test the exact model on your computer before a return window closes.

Amp simulation software

Your interface captures a dry signal. Amp sim software makes it sound like a guitar amp.

Latency: the most important setting

Latency is the delay between picking a note and hearing it. Too high and you can't play in time.

There is no universal numeric target that guarantees comfort. Reported buffer or driver latency may omit conversion, safety buffers, plugins and output. Measure or at least test the complete round trip.

How to set it:

  1. Select the intended interface input and output.
  2. Choose a standard sample rate appropriate to the project.
  3. Begin with a moderate buffer.
  4. Play rapid muted attacks while the full rack and recorder run.
  5. Lower the buffer in steps until latency is acceptable.
  6. If crackles/dropouts appear, return to the last stable value.
  7. Save the working device, rate and buffer.

At the same buffer sample count, a higher sample rate shortens the buffer duration, but it also increases processing load and does not guarantee lower total latency. Choose by compatibility and stability rather than simplistic arithmetic.

That's it. Four links. Each one matters — a bad cable, a noisy interface, or wrong buffer settings will degrade the sound.

Before recording a real take, save a short test and listen for clipping, crackles, doubled monitoring, and timing delay.

Set up step by step

  1. Connect the interface directly and safely. Use the supplied/recommended connection where practical and avoid an untested overloaded hub.
  2. Install current supported software/driver if required. Restart when the vendor requires it.
  3. Connect headphones or monitors to the interface. Avoid splitting input and output across unrelated devices unless the operating system/software supports it reliably.
  4. Plug the guitar into the instrument input.
  5. Select instrument/Hi-Z mode.
  6. Choose the interface in Practice Rack or the recording software.
  7. Set guitar controls. Note pickup, volume, tone and active/passive state.
  8. Set input gain. Play the hardest expected chords and accents with headroom.

Avoid doubled monitoring

Many interfaces can send the input directly to headphones while software also returns the processed signal. Hearing both can create a dry-plus-delayed double that sounds phasey and changes timing perception.

Test:

  1. Turn software monitoring off; note whether direct guitar remains.
  2. Turn direct monitoring off; confirm the processed route remains.
  3. Choose the intended route.
  4. Play a sharp muted transient and listen for two attacks.

Use direct monitoring for a dry zero/low-latency reference only when that supports the goal. For amp-sim feel, monitor the processed software path and stabilize its latency.

Troubleshooting

No input

Check cable, guitar volume/battery, interface input, instrument mode, operating-system permissions and software device/channel selection. Test one link at a time.

Input meter moves but no sound

Check output device, software monitoring, master/output level and headphone/monitor connection. Keep levels low while routing.

Clean input distorts

Bypass all effects. Lower interface gain and confirm instrument/line mode. If an active pickup overloads the input, use the interface's supported pad or input choice.

Crackles and pops

Raise the buffer, close competing audio clients, check CPU load and confirm sample-rate agreement. Avoid changing several tone settings at the same time.

Sound feels delayed

Ensure you are not hearing direct and processed paths together. Lower the buffer within stability limits and bypass high-latency processing for diagnosis.

Direct sound is harsh

Confirm the amp model/capture and Cabinet IR stages. A missing cabinet response is a common cause, but input clipping and excessive high-frequency effects must also be ruled out.

Laptop performance and power

Use stable power settings appropriate to real-time audio. Background updates, thermal throttling and power-saving transitions can cause dropouts. Test the laptop in the same powered/battery mode planned for the session.

Do not block ventilation. Save work before changing drivers or audio devices. Keep a known-good configuration note so troubleshooting can restore rather than reinvent the setup.

Can I plug a guitar directly into a laptop headphone/mic jack?

It is generally not the correct instrument-level, high-impedance direct route. Use a supported audio interface or DI path. A built-in microphone can record an acoustic guitar or amplifier in the room.

Do I need an amp to record guitar on a laptop?

No physical amp is required for direct recording when software provides an amp/cabinet path. A physical amp can be mic'd or connected through a manufacturer-supported line/load route.

What buffer size should I use?
