The recorder preserves a complete take so you can judge what actually happened. Treating them as separate tools produces a much more useful session than recording an endless pile of unstructured clips.

Stage 2: record the smallest useful accompaniment

Use a tone that leaves room for the part you will add. A heavily modulated or reverberant rhythm layer can obscure the attack of a lead exercise. Listen once for timing, once for pitch and articulation, and once for tone or unwanted noise. The recorder is valuable precisely because playback does not share the mental load of performing.

Looper placement versus recorder placement

A baseline rack is:

Effects/amp/Cabinet IR → looper → recorder

The looper captures the effects before it; the recorder captures final rack output. Changing live effects after a completed loop may or may not alter loop playback depending on placement. Test with an obvious delay or EQ move.

Manage overdub level

Each overdub adds energy. Leave headroom on the first layer and monitor cumulative peak/output. If the loop grows louder or muddy:

  1. Undo the last layer.
  2. Decide its musical role.
  3. Move it to another register or rhythm.
  4. Reduce gain/ambience.
  5. Re-record at a controlled level.

A limiter hiding clipping does not preserve an editable clean source. Keep layers few and purposeful.

Use Undo, Redo and Clear safely

Test these controls on a disposable loop before a serious idea:

  • What exactly does Undo remove?
  • Can Redo restore it?
  • Is the original layer protected?
  • Does Clear remove everything immediately?
  • What does Save preserve?

The current Practice Rack looper help says overdubs can be undone/redone and the original layer is retained by Undo behavior, while Clear deletes layers. Verify the current build.

Save before Clear when the idea matters. WAV preserves audio, not editable layer history.

Record a complete take

Stop repairing the loop and perform:

  1. Count in.
  2. Start before the target section.
  3. Play through mistakes.
  4. Continue through the exit.
  5. Stop recording.
  6. Put the guitar down.
  7. Reopen and review the WAV.

Listen separately for timing, pitch, note endings, dynamics, noise and tone. Write one timestamp and action.

Include tuning, tempo, meter, chord progression, number of bars, count-in and revision. Ask the player to identify the downbeat and form without explanation. If they repeatedly guess, improve the file or note rather than blaming the reader.

Keep a practice loop separate from a source-faithful backing or published arrangement. Label simplifications and confirm the recipient may receive any included musical material. Reopen the exact shared WAV after transfer and verify that it was not truncated or replaced.

Archive the tested delivery revision and recipient feedback.

Keep the original local WAV until the recipient confirms that the transferred file opens, starts on the expected count, and contains the complete ending.
