Understand the current stem and edition boundaries
Session Craft currently estimates Vocals, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Keyboard, and Other. Community includes local import, six-stem separation and playback, speed, pitch, A/B loop practice, and project saving. Professional adds chord detection and backing-track export.
The estimated stems are not the original studio multitracks. A teacher should check:
- backing vocals outside Vocals;
- doubled guitar in Other;
- piano or synth divided between Keyboard and Other;
- bass transients in Drums;
- reverb tails across multiple stems;
- missing count-ins or section cues.
If an artifact teaches the wrong note or rhythm, keep more of the full mix or explain the limitation.
Design a three-level lesson package

For difficult material, add a fourth slow-loop state. Do not create ten unlabeled files when three clear states answer the lesson goal.

Write an instruction that can be evaluated
“Practice this” is not an assignment. A useful note includes:

- completion evidence.

Use loops that retain teaching context
Set A before the pickup or setup gesture and B after the resolving event. Listen through the seam. A loop that drops a beat teaches compensation rather than time.
Build nested regions:
- one difficult interval, sticking, or shift;
- one complete phrase;
- the phrase inside the section;
- the full section without a loop.
Move outward only when the smaller movement survives several controlled repetitions. The 20-minute practice routine is a reusable student structure.
Tempo and pitch are separate teaching variables
Slowdown can expose rhythm and coordination while maintaining the chosen pitch target. Pitch change can put a song into a singer’s temporary rehearsal key or match a transposing-instrument exercise. Record both values.
Avoid large simultaneous changes. If speed and key change together, the student cannot know which change affected tone, difficulty, or artifacts. Return to the agreed performance tempo and key before final acceptance.
Chord regions are references, not answer keys
Professional chord detection can provide timeline context, but it does not replace ear training or a teacher’s harmonic analysis. Detected labels may simplify extensions, miss inversions, or react to non-chord tones.
Use the display to ask:
- Does the bass note support this root?
- Is the chord an inversion?
- Does the melody create a suspension?

Student privacy and consent
Local processing is useful for student recordings because no upload is required by the Session Craft workflow. The teacher still needs to follow consent, safeguarding, school, studio, contract, and legal requirements.
Keep separate folders by student or ensemble where appropriate. Limit access, avoid exposing names in shared filenames, and define when lesson recordings and exports will be deleted. Do not reuse one student’s performance as another student’s material without permission.
Copyright and distribution
Owning a CD, download, stream account, or software license does not automatically grant permission to distribute a derivative practice track. Use public-domain, licensed, owned, or otherwise authorized material according to the applicable rules.
When an export cannot be distributed, teach from the local project during the lesson and provide written loop/time instructions the student can reproduce from their own lawful source.
Different student needs
A useful practice package may require:
- a slower tempo but unchanged key;
- a transposed key but normal tempo;
- a guide vocal retained at low level;
- a count-in before the loop;
- a longer loop for a student who relies on form cues;
- larger or simplified written instructions;
- a device-compatible WAV instead of MP3;
- no take-home audio when policy limits distribution.
Accessibility is part of lesson design, not an afterthought. Test the exercise on the student’s actual playback device when possible.
Teacher export acceptance
Before sending a Professional export:
- confirm selected stems and mute states;
- confirm speed, pitch, loop, and volume;
- choose WAV or MP3 intentionally;
- save with a revision and date;
- reopen the exact file;

- transfer it once;
- verify the recipient’s copy when the assignment is important.
MP3 export requires the runtime dependency indicated by the application; WAV is the fallback.
