Three useful stem roles

A reference stem answers “what happened?” Raise the target instrument, select a short A/B loop, and listen for rhythm, note length, articulation, or phrasing. Slowing the loop without changing pitch can expose details that disappear at full speed.

A replacement stem answers “can I perform it?” Lower or mute the part you intend to play while keeping the rhythmic and harmonic supports that make the performance honest. A bassist may keep drums prominent. A singer may keep enough of the instrumental arrangement to hear entrances. A guitarist may retain the vocal and rhythm section while replacing the recorded guitar.

An anchor stem answers “where am I?” Sometimes the target part is not the best guide. Kick drum, bass motion, vocal phrasing, or another instrument may define the form more clearly. Balance the anchor so a loop still feels like part of the song rather than an isolated exercise.

A repeatable session from source to practice

Use this sequence on a demanding section:

  1. Listen to the original mix and identify the exact uncertainty.
  2. Separate locally and compare the target stem with the source.
  3. Choose reference, replacement, and anchor roles.
  4. Mark a loop that includes the musical lead-in and resolution.
  5. Adjust speed or pitch only for a stated practice reason.
  6. Save the project before changing the setup for another exercise.

Saving matters because one recording can support several sessions. The “hear the bass” balance is not the same as the “play the bass” balance. Keeping those decisions in a project is more useful than overwriting one supposedly perfect mix.

Treat estimated stems honestly

Separation cannot retrieve a lost studio multitrack from a finished master. Shared frequencies, effects, doubled parts, and room sound can cross the estimated boundaries. Check ambiguous notes against the original mix and use isolation to improve audibility, not to manufacture certainty.

Four roles for any stem

Reference

Raise or solo a target to answer “what happened?” Check notes, attacks, duration, dynamics, and phrasing.

Replacement

Reduce the role the musician will perform. Start guided with a low reference, then mute it for an independence test.

Anchor

Keep a role that defines time, harmony, or form. Drums, Bass, Vocals, or Keyboard may be a better anchor than the target itself.

Context

Retain enough of the remaining arrangement to make the exercise musically honest. A perfectly isolated part can become misleading without its interaction partners.

Stem separation is not source recovery

A finished stereo master contains overlapping frequencies and shared effects. Separation estimates likely sources. It cannot recreate the original faders, microphones, automation, or isolated studio tracks.

Check:

  • missing attack;
  • bleed;
  • musical-noise texture;
  • unstable sustained tone;
  • split reverb;
  • material assigned to the wrong role;
  • level differences that bias comparison.

When evidence conflicts, prefer the lawful full source and mark uncertainty.

Reference-to-replacement workflow

  1. Listen to the full section.
  2. Solo the target stem.
  3. Define the exact unknown.
  4. Set A/B around pickup and resolution.
  5. Add anchor stems.
  6. Lower the target to a guided level.
  7. Mute the target and perform.
  8. Restore the full mix and compare.
  9. Save the project state.

The process works for bass, guitar, voice, drums, and keyboard because it separates listening from performance.

Timing workflow

Use Drums as the first anchor, but do not assume every note belongs exactly on a drum attack. Compare:

  • onset;
  • subdivision;
  • note ending;
  • rest;
  • phrase acceleration or drag;
  • transition landing.

Add Bass and harmony before accepting the groove. Timing is an ensemble relationship, not only alignment with a click.

Harmony workflow

Use Bass, Keyboard, Guitar, and relevant Other material together. Professional chord regions can suggest a label, but the musician should verify root, inversion, extensions, suspensions, and change boundaries.

Transcription workflow

Slow only until the next event is distinguishable. Identify pitch, onset, duration, and articulation separately. Recheck the target at normal speed and in the full mix.

MP3 depends on the runtime shown by the application; WAV is the fallback.

Local privacy and recovery

Session Craft separation runs locally, avoiding an upload-first path. The user still controls:

  • file permissions;
  • backups;
  • project and stem paths;
  • copied exports;
  • retention and deletion.

Save source, project, and stem assets in an owned folder. Close and reopen before depending on the session. If stems go missing, restore assets or backup before overwriting the only project.
